Exceptional linen sheet with a central monogram FS in bourdon embroidery embellished by leafy sprigs in plumetis and English cutwork. Faint traces of the embroideress' blue chalk around the monogram, indicating that this sheet is as new. An elaborate show of needlework graces the entire return with Venetian lace inserts in the form of stars, plumetis and cutwork flowering vines, reticello style lace bands, and fancy crossed drawn thread rows along the length as well as an important 38.5 inches of the height of the return. A riot of flowers! This extraordinary sheet was no doubt intended for a grand marriage. However the absence of a monogram indicates either that it never came to pass or perhaps that to add this extra element would have been gilding the lily....

One of the rare examples of an antique king sized sheet, this splendid work was very likely created for nobility. Loomed of a weighty but silken and tightly woven white "fil de lin" linen, it displays a large central monogram LL embroidered in plumetis and wrapped around with delicate rose buds in post point. A truly breath taking return is decorated with an intricate mesh of exotic flowers, each formed by the looping of silk cord and then joined together with reticello brides. The embroidery work, typical of the Napoleon III era (1860-1870's) measures between 8 and 16 inches in depth along the width of the return and continues for a full 48 inches along either side. Hand-hemmed with a delicate hemstitch.
